We've seen a lot of turn over in the small space at 26 E Kiowa St in downtown Colorado Springs, most recently the opening of a fresh new restaurant, the Cheese Grill.
Over the years, the space has included everything from a quaint high end dinner restaurant (Bistro De Pinto) to a very short-lived tequila bar called Salud Tequila Bar. Other tenants tried the bar theme too, like Whiskey Dicks and the Downtown Bar-n-Grill.
But the new owner at The Cheese Grill is taking a different approach with fresh cheese sandwiches, salads, and of course Mac & Cheese entrees. The setting hasn't changed much, but already the food is a huge step up from Salud Tequila Bar. Cheese Grill prices and moderate with sandwiches ranging from $6 - $11 which are served with fries. If you're looking for something on the smaller side, macaroni balls and jalapeno poppers are great options around $6 each. Our favorite part is the local, high quality food including products from Ranch Foods Direct and tap beer from Rocky Mountain Brewery.
We tried the Caprese Grilled Cheese, made with balsamic marinated tomatoes, fresh basil and whole milk mozzarella on italian bread ($7.95). Perfect light sandwich with a fresh taste, but still enough to fill you up with the side of fries. If you're still hungry, you can always indulge in a fried snickers with vanilla bean ice cream for desert ($6.25).
If you're going to dine in, make sure you hit happy hour from 3pm-6pm for $2 domestics and $3 premium beers. Otherwise, carry our and lunch delivery are available.

Downtown Jaywalking: Now, you can get hit from both directions!

As of early Monday morning (April 7, 2008), the "main drag" through downtown Colorado Springs (Tejon Street) has reopened to two-way traffic. This isn't a totally new venture since it was like this 37 years ago when the city decided that it was too timeconsuming to drive through downtown. So, they chopped up parts and pieces of the street into one-way sections and it was like a small rat race trying to make your way around. The nice thing was, jaywalking was simple! You just look one way across the three lanes and run. Now, it's a bit more complicated and feels more like "Frogger" minus the logs. I was driving downtown this morning on Tejon and noticed a couple of pedestrians making feeble attempts to cross the now very busy street. Afterall, that was the point of the change and officials expect traffic to increase from 7,500 cars per day to nearly 11,000.
To Do, To See, To Eat, To Play
Every year I look forward to seeing The Best of Colorado Springs published by The Gazette. Basically, it's a collection of both reader reviews and critic reviews of everything you can think of in Colorado Springs. The major categories include: Dining, City Life, Arts & Entertainment, Shopping, Family Life, and Sports & Leisure. You can find everthing from "The Best Crossing Guard" to "Best Place for a Sweet 16 Birthday Party". Check it out - there's lots of great info, some hilarious categories, and you'll find out about places you didn't even know existed!

Colorado Springs continues to grow - 9 people per day!
Colorado Springs continues to grow - take a look at the figures recently released.
Census 2000 Population Growth Over 1990
In 2000, the population of Colorado Springs was 360,890 people. Five years later, we made it to 369,156 and then in 2006 we reached 372,437. Keep in mind, this is just for Colorado Springs proper, not the surrounding communities such as Monument, Manitou Springs, and Fountain.
In fact, the areas that have grown the quickest in the past 6 years are Monument and Fountain. On the other end of the spectrum, Calhan, Cripple Creek, and Victor are down anywhere from 3-5%.
The Gazette breaks down the growth by area in today's edition. Take a look:
Uneven Population Shifts
In my opinion, it's a great time to be living in Colorado Springs. We're seeing the growth that gives the city the ability to "be alive and thrive". Plus, we're seeing campaigns like DAP (Downtown Action Plan) to help increase redevelopment and revitalize crucial target areas. These plans will continue to assure that The Springs will have a vibrant and exciting future.
