Block out happy hour all next week - there are some killer new spots that have just popped up around the Colorado Springs area. Some of these you could even hit for lunch or as an afternoon snack. Check out our top 5 new places (in no particular order):

1) Rooster's House of Ramen:

Chef Mark Henry has been busy. As a former chef at Brother Luck Street Eats, he's split off to create his own success and the newest addition is filling an important void in the Colorado Springs food scene: ramen. In early May 2017 he opened Rooster's House of Ramen with fantastic success right off the bat, probably due to his reputation and foodie followers.

Johnny Nolan's N3 Taphouse and Restaurant in the Limit District
N3 Taphouse in the Limit District

3) N3 Taphouse:
Remember the sad day when Southside Johnny's closed in downtown Colorado Springs? Well Johnny Nolan had good reasons for that decision, and this is the best one from which we all get to benefit. Located in the Limit District between downtown Colorado Springs and Old Colorado City, Nolan took the former fire station #3 (hence the name N3) and converted it to a new westside restaurant and taphouse. Don't miss this one - this fantastic, innovative menu along with their 30 beer taps with hard-to-find brews will soon become a happy hour favorite for locals. Plus, it's the only place we know of that you can get bananas foster or licorice ice cream for dessert!

Top 10 birthday specials in Colorado Springs

Like most people, I like my birthday celebration to last the entire month of my birthday. The good news is there are plenty of restaurants and places that will send you freebies to celebrate your birthday. Some are only valid for a week around your birthday, and others you can take advantage of the entire month. So, what are the best email lists and clubs to join so you have a month long birthday celebration?

It's a sweet deal and still an amazing view no matter what.

The next best is probably Starbucks which is a free drink for your birthday if you're a Starbucks Rewards member. These are my top choices, but there are plenty more with free desserts (after your purchase an entree) and other perks.
If you want additional rewards for your birthday (that usually include a purchase of some kind), check out these other email lists: Taco Bueno, Applebees, Bj's Restaurant, Nosh, Dunkin Donuts, Famous Dave's and Panera Bread.

Remember to read the fine print so you know what the coupons are good and not good for. Also, pay close attention to the expiration dates as some of them only last a few days. Most of all, enjoy your birthday month with these great Colorado Springs restaurants!

INSIDER TIP: Download a customer reward app like Flok and reap the benefits all year long. This app specifically includes a mobile punchcard for various retailers around town.  Sign up here

The Cheese Grill opens in Downtown Colorado Springs

We've seen a lot of turn over in the small space at 26 E Kiowa St in downtown Colorado Springs, most recently the opening of a fresh new restaurant, the Cheese Grill.
Over the years, the space has included everything from a quaint high end dinner restaurant (Bistro De Pinto) to a very short-lived tequila bar called Salud Tequila Bar. Other tenants tried the bar theme too, like Whiskey Dicks and the Downtown Bar-n-Grill.
But the new owner at The Cheese Grill is taking a different approach with fresh cheese sandwiches, salads, and of course Mac & Cheese entrees. The setting hasn't changed much, but already the food is a huge step up from Salud Tequila Bar. Cheese Grill prices and moderate with sandwiches ranging from $6 - $11 which are served with fries. If you're looking for something on the smaller side, macaroni balls and jalapeno poppers are great options around $6 each. Our favorite part is the local, high quality food including products from Ranch Foods Direct and tap beer from Rocky Mountain Brewery.
We tried the Caprese Grilled Cheese, made with balsamic marinated tomatoes, fresh basil and whole milk mozzarella on italian bread ($7.95). Perfect light sandwich with a fresh taste, but still enough to fill you up with the side of fries. If you're still hungry, you can always indulge in a fried snickers with vanilla bean ice cream for desert ($6.25).
If you're going to dine in, make sure you hit happy hour from 3pm-6pm for $2 domestics and $3 premium beers. Otherwise, carry our and lunch delivery are available.

3 great phone apps for enjoying Colorado Springs: Search, locate, review and be rewarded

There are plenty of events, restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues in Colorado Springs to keep your social life busy. Whether you're into bike riding or live entertainment, there is something for everyone.
Better yet, there are even phone apps to help you search, locate and be rewarded for your discoveries.  Check out these 3 apps that will help you in your Colorado Springs area social adventures:

Foursquare: The Ultimate City Guide
This is the must-have app which can be used throughout the world, but was started in New York so it works best in the United States. This app helps people search, locate and rate any location.  Whether you're looking for a great restaurant, shopping mall, or shoe repair store you'll find it with Foursquare along with tips and reviews from other users. You can even create searches for restaurant which may have items that meet your tastes honing in on specific things like cilantro, martinis, or strawberry shortcake.
Click here to download for Apple, Android, or Windows platforms.

IndyScene: What to do around town
Foursquare will help you find establishments, but you'll want the Colorado Springs Indy Scene app to find events, concerts, and happy hour specials throughout town. It's one of the most extensive community calendars which includes surrounding area events as well. The app is easy to use and events are searchable by day and category.

ReceiptHog: Get rewarded for your shopping
What did you buy today? Groceries? Quick trip to Target? Pet supplies? Now you can get rewarded for all these things, plus more.  Most retailers, including grocery stores like King Soopers, are eligible purchases to help you earn points towards cash or gift cards. Just take a picture of your receipt with your phone and watch the rewards pile up. It's easy and slightly addictive. Unfortunately, restaurants and gas fill ups don't count but there are plenty of other ways to earn points.
